Abstract
Carcinoma of the lip is the most common malignant tumor of the oral cavity and one of the most readily curable malignancies in the head and neck. In the treatments of lip carcinoma, surgical management is considered in the first place because of
the
advantages such as eradication of disease, pathologic survey of margins, and reconstruction of the defect in a single procedure. The successful reconstruction of lip can provide the satisfactory result in deglutition, formation of speech, and
facial
expression. Small defect can be managed by direct closure but larger defect needs to use the more tissue such as local flaps for reconstruction. Local flaps are preferable to regional flaps for closing the defect because of good color and texture
match
and the availability of mucous membrane for the internal lining.
We experienced the various types of local flaps for the reconstructions of the lip defects made by the surgical resection of carcinoma.
The results and details of each procedures were discussed with the review of the literature. (Korean J Otolaryngol 38:6, 1995)
